Philosophy and Literature: about Ortega y Gasset

José M. González García

This article in honor of Professor Eugeniusz Górski is centered on the importance of the literature of Goethe (and also Cervantes) in the philosophy of Ortega y Gasset. Many of Ortega’s ideas have a precedent in Goethe’s literature or arise from his refl ection on the great Weimar poet: the conception of the self and its circumstances, the idea of personality, the need for renunciation and for accepting the limitations of human life or the conception of work as a game connect the intellectual world of the two authors. In this sense, Goethe is a key to understanding the philosophy of Ortega.
