Religious Faith and Human Freedom in Henry Totting of Oyta’s Commentary on Peter Lombard’s Sentences

Andrzej I. Dumała

In his commentary on the Sentences, Henry Totting of Oyta takes up the problem of the relationship between faith and human freedom. From his perspective, act of religious belief is not opposed to human freedom. However, this act is not just a simple result of an arbitrary decision. Before human being decides whether to believe or not, he/ she must have both an ability and deeply felt personal need for faith. He/she must recognize and learn the object of faith as well. Th erefore, it is necessary to show that the object of faith actually exists.
