Sociology of Knowledge and Social-Scientific Hermeneutics

Hans-Georg Soeffner

Following Max Weber, Edmund Husserl and Alfred Schütz the article identifies an ambitions sociology of knowledge as a comprehensive sociology of culture representing both theoretical and historical empirical analysis. “Verstehende Soziologie” in Max Weber’s sense is based on a hermeneutic background. Unlike the “cartesian” concept of science describing the world applying “mathematical rules” (Husserl) hermeneutics interpret the social world by empirically reconstructing the “social constructions of reality” (Berger/Luckmann) and by analytically translating everyday experiences (“fi rst order constructions”, Alfred Schütz) into theoretically based descriptions and concepts (“second order constructions”, Alfred Schütz).
