The subject of this paper is to study the genesis of the pragmatic maxim in Charles S. Peirce’s philosophy. Its purpose is to show that pragmatism was founded on Peirce’s semiotic idealism. Th is claim is substantiated by reconstructing semiotic idealism on the basis of Peirce’s writings of the 1860s.
