Sartre’s Meditations

Camille Riquier

Passing through the German phenomenological influences of Husserl and Heidegger, Sartre’s philosophy does not break the resistant bond that fi rmly fixes his thought to the Cartesian tradition. Instead it seems that Sartre’s investigation finds in the field of phenomenology a powerful relay and some meaningful resources to keep on questioning some Cartesian problems and, on the other hand, to clarify and to appropriate those theories which have been gleaned from Descartes’ philosophy.  Th is paper aims at describing how Sartre’s philosophy, rising against the offi cial shape of Cartesianism, brings an unusual Descartes forth. Following this different interpretation the path of the Meditations on First Philosophy could be travelled once again in an original and innovative way, giving a new life to Descartes’ thought.
