Gorgias: Rhetoric as Theory and Practice

This article examines, in detail and from a philosophical point of view, two preserved speeches by Gorgias: Praise of Helen and Defence of Palamedes. Gorgias formulates the original concept of the art of effective persuasion, based on knowledge of human nature (strictly: on knowledge of habits, inclinations, mental laws, rules of emotional response etc.), well-founded theory of knowledge and intriguing theory of logos. Th e impact of this concept on Plato’s philosophy and on the entire ancient culture is highlighted, and rhetorical heritage in specific issues and settlements is indicated.
